Melting crayons with Carolyn

Scott joked about wanting to follow me around filming me melting crayons and call it melting crayons with carolyn so I ran with it.

So I mentioned before I use the flash dryer from my screen printing setup to melt wax. I would assume most people do not have one so there are a few different things you can do. A hair dryer or heat gun works just as well. I am using card stock since it holds the wax better and I melt all my wax on a block of masonite that has been painted with white house paint. This simply releases the wax better and does not get freakishly hot.

At any time you can click on any of the photos to enlarge them.

I cut up a bunch of crayons in 1/4 inch chunks just because it melts faster cut up and spreads better now I left the wrappers on and that was lazy of me, they will have to be fished out of the hot wax before I stamp the paper down so I left that in to tell you to not be lazy like this. When I get a new box of crayons I usually peel them all right away but I wanted to do this blog so...

Melted but still not giving me the coverage I want

So I tilt it down then to the side to get it to spread a bit more.

I then drop a piece of paper on top and let it slowly pull the wax into it.

Peel it off and I have this.

Since there is still wax left I am going to stamp it again

Tada full coverage

Now to just do one final print to get the rest of the wax off the panel

Less wax, less coverage. I rarely clean the board and just keep adding new wax and stamping away since the build up over time also has it's own appeal.

What I have been doing with these depends by in large on my mood. Sometimes I look at the one like the second print and see if I see anything in it, if I do I accentuate it. Sometimes I like them as is - abstracted fun. The ones with the heavier amounts of wax I usually scratch images into. Sometimes I go back and add more wax again, or paint on them, or add marker accents. I am only restrained by my own imagination. A few examples then go play and have fun with it if you desire.

Guy Fawkes Beard png file for photoshoppery

Lately I have been doing a run of beards made from encaustic melted wax. These have so far all been based off real people, or rather real people currently living.

For fun I thought I would break suit for a  minute and make a .png version of a guy fawkes beard for the v for vendetta and anonymous crowd. I thought it would be easier for people to grab the full size png from here rather than off plus or other sites where I may have downloading of my images shut off

so, click the image to enlarge, right click save as and go forth and photoshop

How to make an encaustic art beard

Ok so I started this as a fun project on Google plus but there is no way I can feasibly create a *Beardtrit* or beard portrait for everyone sporting facial hair. So I thought I would offer up the next best thing, a tutorial for those that might want to play with making their own.

you can click on any of the photos to enlarge them

So I start by using a panel made of masonite as what I am going to melt my wax on. I do this so the wax does not sink into it and will release when I stamp paper on to it. I am using regular crayons and out of experience I found a small chunk of wax will cover a lot of surface and it is easier to cover it faster if you cut them up. I have a flash dryer for a screen printing setup I am using to melt the wax, I do not expect you to have one of these. This can be done just as easily with a heat gun or hairdryer.
I let them melt completely then tilt the panel to let the wax run as much over the whole surface as I can.
Then I lay  heavy card stock down and use a piece of wood to smooth it over the wax since wax is hot and I do not like burning my fingertips
I usually end up doing this up to five times until I am happy with the texture and coverage

For the next part I usually print the photo of the beard I am using, in this case Steve Holst and cut it out making a stencil. I then use a pencil to trace around it onto the wax.

I then take and x-acto knife and use the side of it to scratch the wax back off in the form of hair

From here you can do a few things. I had originally started blacking all the background out with acrylic paint. Lately I have thought it is a better effect if I use the x-acto knife to cut it out and glue it to a white or black piece of card stock depending on what looks best.

Then I scan it and done.
